It has been a relatively quiet hurricane season so far, but the Atlantic could see its first hurricane soon.

Tropical Storm Erin, the fifth named storm of the year, has formed just west of the Cabo Verde Islands—and forecasters say it’s likely to strengthen into the first hurricane of 2025 within days.

Tropical Storm Erin's Timeline

NOAA

A strong cluster of thunderstorms rolled off Africa over the weekend and quickly organized into a tropical storm Monday. Erin is moving west at about 20 mph with sustained winds near 45 mph. Warm ocean waters, low wind shear, and favorable atmospheric conditions are setting the stage for steady intensification.
