Last weekTropical Storm Fernand May Form This Weekend; Here’s Where It Could Go
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring several areas in the Atlantic, including a disturbance that could soon become Tropical Storm Fernand.
Invest 90L: Main System of Interest
The NHC has designated this system as Invest 90L, currently producing showers and thunderstorms a few hundred miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands.
Development Potential: Conditions have become more favorable, and the disturbance could develop into a tropical depression or even Tropical Storm Fernand by this weekend. While most forecasts keep it at tropical storm strength, a few models indicate the possibility of reaching hurricane intensity early next week.
Name Update: If it strengthens, the next storm name on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane list is Fernand (pronounced fair-NAHN).
Impacts: Unlike Hurricane Erin, this system is not expected to bring widespread flooding rainfall to the northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. Some showers with localized downpours are still possible.
Track: Forecast models show the system turning north, then northeast into the central Atlantic by next week. While the U.S. mainland is not threatened, Bermuda could see impacts as early as Sunday night or Monday depending on the timing of the northward turn.
