Trump Renamed the Gulf of Mexico. One Year Later, No One Cares.

2 hours agoPresident Donald Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico one year ago. Federal agencies updated their maps, government websites reflected the change, and NOAA started issuing forecasts with the new name. On paper, the Gulf of America became official.
On the ground? Not so much. Along 1,680 miles of coastline, from Florida's Key West to Texas's Brownsville, locals are sticking with the name they've used their entire lives.
The Name That Wouldn't Stick
"Down here, we just refer to it as the Gulf," said Susanna Pope, 44, who runs fishing charters out of Key West. "It's like saying you're going into town. You don't have to say Key West. You just say town."
A survey of coastal communities from Florida to Texas found little consensus on what locals are actually calling the body of water. Some use the new name. Most don't. And plenty of people had no idea the name even changed.
