A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the Greek island of Kasos on Wednesday, prompting tsunami warnings for several Aegean islands, including Crete, Rhodes, Karpathos, and Kasos. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 62.5 kilometers and was felt across southeastern Greece and as far as Israel.

Greece's Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection warned residents and tourists to evacuate coastal areas and move to higher ground. Despite the strength of the earthquake, no significant damage or casualties have been reported so far.

What Is a Tsunami?

A tsunami is a series of large, powerful waves caused by the sudden displacement of water, often due to undersea earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides.

Unlike regular ocean waves, tsunamis can travel at speeds up to 500 mph in deep water and grow significantly in height as they approach shallow coastal areas.
