Update in Southeast Asia Tropical Weather: Over 700 Confirmed Fatalities

A series of deadly storms has resulted in over 700 fatalities in Southeast Asia over the last month. Officials warn that the death toll is likely to continue to climb with hundreds more missing. Heavy rain spurred on by tropical weather has triggered widespread flooding throughout much of Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia. Cyclone Senyar unleashed catastrophic flooding and landslides throughout the Sumatra region in recent days. The Sunday update from a government official confirmed that at least 435 deaths have been reported, a jump from Saturday's estimate of 303. In addition, 406 people are still listed as missing.

Search and rescue crews have been trying to reach stranded residents since Tuesday. The influx of monsoon moisture caused rivers to overflow their banks in North Sumatra province. Residents had to use rubber boats to evacuate the island. Looting is also becoming a problem, as relief supplies have been slow to arrive in the battered region.
