While all eyes have been trained on the East Coast over the weekend as a monster sub-tropical storm system roars up the coastline, the tropics are quietly starting to fire up again. Here is a look at what forecasters are watching now in the Atlantic basin, including a disturbance that is being blamed for dozens of fatalities in Mexico.

Tropical Storm Lorenzo Develops in the Eastern Atlantic

The tropical disturbance previously being tracked as Invest 97L has now strengthened into Tropical Storm Lorenzo, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 AM AST advisory on Monday. Lorenzo is currently located at 14.2°N, 40.3°W, moving northwest at 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

Forecasters expect Lorenzo to continue on a general northwest track over the open Atlantic through the end of the week. While there are no immediate land threats, the NHC is monitoring the storm’s development closely as it moves through favorable environmental conditions that could support further strengthening.
