The warmth will return to the Midwest and parts of the Northeast this week, just as New England goes back to the chilly conditions. Here is a closer look at this dramatic split of temperatures slicing through the nation.

Warmth Expanding from the Midwest Into the Northeast as the Week Progresses

Temperatures will climb into the 70s and 80s in the days ahead in the Midwest. While the Northeast will also enjoy warmer weather this week, the temperatures will not come close to reaching last week's highs. Meanwhile, a chill in the air will be the story for New England.

The northeastern corner of the country will continue to shiver until at least Wednesday. The warm air currently building over the Plains states will creep to the east on Tuesday and Wednesday, encompassing the Midwest by the middle of the week. The mercury will soar to 10 to 20 degrees above the historical average for much of the Midwest.

For instance, after struggling to crack the 50-degree mark on Sunday, readings in Chicago will hit the 70s on Tuesday. The peak of the warmth will likely reach the Windy City on Thursday. The metro area may see temperatures inch up to about 77 degrees at this time.

St. Louis enjoyed temperatures of near 70 degrees on Monday. The Arch City will see readings hover in the 80s on Tuesday through Thursday. Residents should take advantage of this weather pattern, as rain showers, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures are on the horizon for this part of the Midwest beginning on Friday. The next storm system is slated to arrive at this time, bringing the threat of severe weather to the Plains and Mississippi Valley.

The warm-up will be quite noticeable in places such as Pittsburgh. This part of western Pennsylvania could see the temperatures increase by about 40 degrees in a period of just 12 hours on Tuesday. The city is forecast to wake up to temperatures below freezing before the mercury surges into the 50s and 60s in the afternoon hours.

By Wednesday, Pittsburgh is expecting high temperatures that reach the low 70s. Thursday and Friday will feel downright toasty, with highs in the low 80s. The Steel City will see the impacts of the storm system coming over from the Plains on Saturday, resulting in scattered rain showers and highs that max out in the mid 60s.
