1 hour agoA man who jumped a security fence at Denver International Airport was struck and killed by a Frontier Airlines jet during takeoff late Friday night, triggering a brief engine fire, a full cabin evacuation, and dual federal investigations.
The incident took place at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time on May 9, 2026. Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, was rolling down Runway 17L headed for Los Angeles International Airport when the aircraft struck the pedestrian. The individual, who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene. Denver International Airport officials said the person is not believed to be an airport employee and had breached the perimeter fence roughly two minutes before the impact.
What the Pilot Told the Tower
Air traffic control audio, shared by the ATC.com app, captured the crew's emergency transmission. "Tower, Frontier 4345, we're stopping on the runway... Uh, we just hit somebody... we have an engine fire," the pilot said. A second transmission reported smoke in the cabin. The pilot also told controllers the aircraft was carrying 231 souls and more than 21,000 pounds of fuel on board.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the aircraft had reached roughly 146 miles per hour before the takeoff was aborted. Once stopped on the runway, smoke began filling the cabin and the crew ordered a full emergency evacuation.
