There is a lot of winter weather brewing across the eastern half of the country. Forecasters have now turned their attention to a coastal storm that is expected to bring snow to parts of the Southeast on Sunday before making its way up the mid-Atlantic coast and into New England by the end of the weekend. Read on for what the latest forecast models are indicating will unfold in the days ahead.

Coastal Storm Will Race Up the Atlantic Seaboard Over the Weekend

A large swath of the East Coast will be under the threat of measurable snow this weekend as a coastal storm comes to life and pairs with a fresh infusion of Arctic air. This weather maker could trigger a rare snow event for the Southeast before hugging the coast and impacting some of the major cities in the mid-Atlantic, the Northeast, and New England by the time that the new work week begins.

A change in the position of the jet stream will allow frigid air to seep as far south as Georgia on Sunday, supporting the development of snow in the southeastern U.S. Sunday's forecast is calling for the chance of snow in a zone from southern Georgia to the north into Delaware.

In this air mass satellite view, reds and oranges highlight colder, drier air moving south across the eastern United States, while greens and yellows indicate warmer, moisture-rich air flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic. Where these colors meet is where storms can strengthen, making that overlap zone critical for determining storm intensity, precipitation type, and track. NOAA
