The month of February is going to start with a bang with southern storms taking aim at this region of the U.S. with severe thunderstorms bringing the risk of heavy rain, strong winds, and flash flooding.

Here is what you need to know about this rocky start to the month and the southern U.S. weekend weather forecast.

Active Storm Track Setting Up Across the South

The south-central and southeastern portions of the country are going to to see the calm and quiet weather pattern that brought January to a close come to an end with the start of February.

A more active storm track will usher in renewed concerns of flooding and other severe weather impacts beginning late in the week and lingering through this weekend weather.

This particular weather maker got its start as a Southern California winter storm earlier in the week, dropping immense moisture across cities such as San Francisco and San Diego as well as heavy snow for the Sierra Nevada.

The system is currently making its way across the Southwest and Rocky Mountains, expected to hit the southern Plains and the Gulf Coast on Friday.
