Wet Weather Pattern Will Persist Across Most of the Florida Peninsula

While the bulk of the eastern third of the country will remain mostly dry this week, Florida will spend the next few days dodging rain showers and thunderstorms. Here is a closer look at what the Sunshine State should expect this week.

Florida Braces for Consecutive Days of Stormy Weather

Forecasters in Florida are warning that the peninsula could be dealing with flash flooding concerns as a nearby storm continues to send a steady stream of moisture across the peninsula. The soggy weather pattern will not be welcome news for beachgoers, vacationers visiting Orlando's theme parks, or residents hoping to get out and work on the lawn.

This is typically the time of the year when Florida experiences regular thunderstorm activity. The increase in precipitation during the late summer and early fall months comes as temperatures and humidity levels remain high. The prevalence of stiff sea breezes then works to create rising clouds that spark the daily downpours and storms.

Although most of the storm activity this time of the year is brief in nature, the state can experience times of repeated storms when the right conditions are in place. This is what is happening this week as a nearby front is partnering with a zone of low pressure and a surge of moisture from the tropics. The persistent rain showers will increase the chance of flooding as storm drains become overwhelmed.

How Much Rain to Expect

The forecast models are calling for most of the state to pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain through Friday. This is the amount of rain that the area's drainage systems and sandy soil can generally handle. However, some parts of the peninsula could see rainfall amounts exceeding 6 inches, amplifying the threat of flooding. The risk will be the most pronounced in areas that see rainfall rates of more than 2 inches per hour.

The storms will certainly put a damper on outdoor activities throughout the week. The best strategy for beating Mother Nature is to head out early in the day, as most of the storms will come together in the afternoon and evening hours. That does not mean that you can rule out the chance of an overnight or early morning storm or passing rain shower.
