When a tornado warning sounds, you have minutes, sometimes seconds, to make a decision that could save your life. Knowing exactly where to go before a storm hits can be the difference between walking away and not. So, where is the safest place to be when a tornado touches down?

The Golden Rule: Go Low and Get Interior

The single most important rule during a tornado is to get to the lowest level of a sturdy building and move to an interior room away from windows. Tornadoes are most dangerous because of two things: the extreme wind speeds (which can exceed 300 mph in the most violent EF5 storms) and the flying debris those winds carry. Glass, wood, metal; anything not bolted down becomes a projectile.

Underground storm shelters and basements provide the highest level of protection during a tornado by putting layers of earth and structure between you and extreme winds. Adobe Stock
