How Weather Influences the Changing of the Leaves During the Fall

Meteorologists are warning that the traditionally favorite destinations to check out the changing leaves may not deliver the best viewing conditions this year. Instead, some of the most beautiful displays of Mother Nature in the fall may take place beyond the typical popular places to leaf peep.

The vibrancy of the changing leaves is determined weeks before the transformation actually takes place. For instance, the amount of rain picked up in any particular area throughout the summer greatly influences the behavior of the leaves. Drought conditions cause stress for trees, prompting them to let go of their leaves earlier than is typical. A lack of moisture also dulls the colors of the leaves.

Conversely, too much rain during the summer months can also weaken the fall foliage viewing. This is especially true if the excess moisture falls during the late summer and early fall. Too much rain supports the development of mold on trees, serving as a breeding ground for insects to congregate. These insects then chew away at the leaves and can cause them to fall early or die.
