It's one of the most Googled weather questions in America and the answer isn't what most people expect.

Most people assume tornadoes are a Midwest problem. A threat confined to the wide-open plains of Kansas and Oklahoma, where funnel clouds are practically a fact of life. But tornado activity spans the entire country, and every state has seen at least one confirmed twister.

However, the data does reveal one clear outlier, a state so rarely touched by twisters that its entire history with them can be counted on one hand.

Every State Has Seen a Tornado

It's a common assumption that some states are simply tornado-free. In reality, every one of the 50 states has recorded at least one tornado. Tornadoes have been documented everywhere from the mountains of New England to the beaches of Hawaii, making the United States the most tornado-prone country on Earth, averaging around 1,200 twisters per year.
