June 1st marks the official start of hurricane season, and the best time to start preparing is now. The season can be unpredictable, but this season is expected to bring around 17 named storms that will form in the tropics. This is higher than the average of 14 per year.

As mentioned, the best time to prepare for these storms is well beforehand. You don’t want to get caught in a situation where the storm is coming and there are no more supplies because they are bought out, or you can’t evacuate because it is too late.

Government agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), are urging families and individuals to prepare well in advance. President Donald Trump echoed these concerns in a recent National Hurricane Preparedness Week proclamation, stating, “This is a time to raise awareness about the dangers of these storms and encourage citizens in coastal areas and inland communities to be vigilant in emergency planning and preparation.”

So what do these plans look like? This article outlines the most important actions you can take now to protect yourself, your family, your home, and your community when hurricanes threaten.
