September is slipping away. But what does that mean for the weather? Here is a look at what Mother Nature typically delivers during the month of October.

Tropical Weather Threats Linger, Particularly in Florida

While the worst of the Atlantic hurricane season begins to ease in October, that does not mean that the risks are over. Florida is particularly vulnerable to tropical weather impacts this time of the year due to the most likely areas of development close to the peninsula.

The Sunshine State has seen 34 hurricanes come ashore in October, dating back to 1851. This number is nearly triple the amount that second-place Louisiana has recorded. The highest number of hurricanes has made landfall in South Florida. For instance, there have been 19 hurricanes that have passed within 70 miles of Miami during this month in recorded history. Three of these hurricanes went directly over the downtown area. Most recently, Hurricane Milton in 2024 and Hurricane Michael in 2018 both unleashed catastrophic damage across parts of the state.
