A snorkeler off the coast of Israel recently met a horrifying fate that’s forcing scientists to rethink what they thought they knew about one of the ocean’s most misunderstood species: the dusky shark.

What Happened Off the Coast of Israel

It was supposed to be an ordinary morning in April 2025 along the calm, blue waters of Hadera, a coastal city in northern Israel known for its warm currents and winter shark sightings. A 40-year-old tourist, snorkeling about 300 feet from shore, was filming the marine life below when something unthinkable happened.

According to witnesses, he suddenly began shouting for help. “They’re biting me!” he cried, as several shark fins broke the surface and the surrounding water turned red. Panic spread across the beach as onlookers watched helplessly from the shore.
