The new year is kicking off on a messy note for a large swath of the Northeast and the Upper Midwest. Meanwhile, rain will be the biggest disruption for travelers heading home across the West and the southeastern U.S. Here is a closer look at the New Year’s travel forecast.

Winter Weather Impacts to Persist Through the End of the Week in the Northern U.S.

There are a few travel trouble spots brewing across the U.S. to end the week. The timing is not ideal, as many people look to head home as the holidays come to an end.

Winter is in full swing to start the year in a zone from the Upper Midwest and through the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast. Arctic air will remain entrenched in these regions, keeping the threat of wintry impacts in the picture. Motorists should be ready for the possibility of slippery roads from Minnesota to the east into New York, Pennsylvania, and up into New England. The line of wintry impacts will dip to the south as far as West Virginia at times.

NOAA’s forecast shows wintry precipitation spreading from the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, setting the stage for slick roads and slower travel through Friday. (NOAA/WPC)
