The end of the weekend will usher in a break from the heat and humidity across the Northeast. Enjoy it while you can, as the return to pleasant weather will be brief. Here is what you need to know about what to expect in the northeastern U.S. in the days ahead.

Brief Break from the Heat Headed to the Northeast

The Northeast will enjoy a short-lived period of cooler air and lower humidity levels by the end of the weekend. However, a new surge of heat and humidity will dictate the weather by next week.

Temperatures will climb into the mid 90s across a large portion of the interior mid-Atlantic on Saturday. Rising humidity levels will make it feel even steamier. Saturday will also be the peak of the heat in areas farther to the north and the west, with temperatures expected to hover well into the 80s from the Midwest into the interior portions of the Northeast.

NOAA's 6-to-10-day temperature outlook shows a strong signal for above-normal temperatures across much of the eastern United States from June 11-15, following a brief cooldown this weekend.

A cold front dipping down from Canada will cut through the warm air mass beginning late Saturday and into Monday. This will bring a bit of relief to those already dealing with temperatures more reminiscent of the middle of summer. The greatest change in the weather will be experienced across the Northeast when temperatures tumble about 10 to 20 degrees from Saturday's peak readings.

The front will also usher in the chance of rain and thunderstorms to some areas. Forecasters are warning that some of the storm cells could turn severe during the late afternoon and evening hours on Saturday and Sunday. Potential impacts include torrential downpours, hail, and gusty winds.
