As the tropical Atlantic begins to heat up this week, it is looking more and more likely that Humberto and Imelda will become a reality shortly. What is the history of these two storm names? Here is a look back in history.

Imelda's Brief History

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring two areas of potential tropical development in the Atlantic Basin. The next two names on deck for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season are Humberto and Imelda.

Imelda was the least nefarious of the pair of storms. The feature officially became a tropical storm at 12:45 pm CDT on September 17, 2019. Forecasters began monitoring the only Atlantic storm to go on to be called Imelda on September 14 as the cluster of rain showers and storms fired up in the Gulf near the coast of Texas.

A NOAA rainfall analysis map shows the extreme precipitation totals from Tropical Storm Imelda between September 16–20, 2019, with Beaumont and surrounding areas recording some of the heaviest downpours. (NOAA/National Weather Service)
