Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and mosquitoes? Temperatures more reminiscent of summer and early fall are extending the normal mosquito season for a large swath of the southern U.S. This means that these annoying pests may be an uninvited guest at many Thanksgiving activities this year. Read on for all of the details.

Why You Cannot Rule Out Mosquitoes This Thanksgiving

Unseasonably warm temperatures are pairing with heavy rain to stretch out the mosquito season longer than is typical. A lack of deep freeze conditions is also keeping the critters alive longer than usual.

A NOAA forecast map shows widespread warmth and areas of rain across the southern and central United States, conditions that allow mosquitoes to stay active well into late November. (NOAA)

The weather trends explain why mosquitoes are still thriving. A new report out of Climate Central details that summer temperatures in 227 major metro areas are lingering at least 10 days longer into the fall when compared to the early 1970s. States such as Florida and Texas have seen the most significant extension of this heat.
