Dangerously cold temperatures are diving down into the northeastern U.S., prompting local officials to urge residents to exercise caution when heading outside. Here is the latest on the arrival of the deep freeze.

Arctic Air Delivers Dangerous Conditions to the Northeast

What is expected to be the coldest weekend of the winter season is upon the Northeast. The pairing of a blast of Arctic air and gusty winds will create life-threatening real feel readings for several states. The Arctic air mass is moving south into the U.S. from the tundra located to the north of Hudson Bay, Canada.

In addition to the hazardous conditions outside, energy grids will be stretched as they work to keep up with the increased demand. Over 100 million utility customers are expected to be impacted by the unseasonably frigid temperatures. It has already been an atypically cold winter for this part of the country, translating to energy bills that could run hundreds of dollars over what most people expect to pay.

The front edge of the Arctic front will push to the southeast through the Northeast as the day progresses on Saturday. Gusty winds will whip up behind the front, amplifying the chill in the air.
