NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center shows late-season snow and mixed precipitation across parts of the Northwest and northern Rockies, while severe thunderstorms and heavy rain threats stretch from the Plains into the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Old Man Winter is saying "not so fast" to residents of the West ready to welcome spring. A surge of cold temperatures is tracking across the U.S. this week, bringing the chance of late-season snow to the higher terrains of the Pacific Northwest and into the Rockies. What parts of the region will see the snow, when will it hit, and how much accumulation is in the forecast? Read on for all of the details of this wintry forecast.

Winter Rearing Its Head Again in the Northwest and Into the Rockies

A late-season winter weather maker is bringing significant snow totals to the mountains of the Northwest and beyond. Lower elevations will not escape the wrath of this potent storm, with a chilly rain unfolding across much of the northwestern quadrant of the country. Temperatures are going to be 10 to 25 degrees below what is expected for the middle of April.

The infusion of frigid temperatures will translate to snowflakes flying as low as 1,500 feet in the Washington Cascades. Several inches to up to a foot of snow is expected at elevations below 2,000 feet as far south as the northern Oregon Cascades.

Snoqualmie Pass along Interstate 90 in Washington will see 1 to 3 inches of new snow on Wednesday to add to the few inches picked up on Tuesday. Another 1 to 3 inches is in the forecast overnight Wednesday and into Thursday for this busy mountain pass.

NOAA’s forecast map for April 16 shows late-season snow and mixed precipitation continuing across parts of the interior West, while rain and thunderstorms spread across the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast.

The line of snow will push farther to the east on Thursday and Friday, reaching the Rockies at this time.  It will feel more like the beginning of March than the middle of April throughout much of the Intermountain West by the end of the week.
