A major winter storm is still producing disruptive impacts across a broad slice of the U.S., even as the system begins to move offshore. The focus on Monday is shifting to three problem areas: lingering heavy snow in the Northeast, pockets of freezing rain in the Mid-Atlantic, and lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes.
Heavy snow remains a concern in the Northeast today, with additional snow continuing into Tuesday in some areas as the storm gradually exits.
Parts of the Mid-Atlantic still face a light freezing rain risk, which can quickly re-glaze roads and power lines, especially where earlier icing already occurred.
Lake-effect snow is expected to develop near the Great Lakes, extending travel issues beyond the core storm track.
Power outages remain widespread nationwide, with more than 820,000 customers reported without electricity as of Monday morning in storm-impacted regions.
Air travel is still heavily disrupted, with thousands of additional cancellations reported Monday on top of very high totals Sunday.
Dangerous cold remains locked in behind the storm, keeping recovery slower because snow and ice do not melt efficiently when temperatures stay below freezing for multiple days.
