Warmer temperatures are making their move across much of the central and eastern U.S. this week. But that is not the case for the northern reaches of the country. Here is a look at where winter is still flexing its power in the days ahead.

Winter Weather Lingering Across Northern Tier of the U.S.

A distinctive line separating the warm and cold air across the Midwest and the Northeast has set up in recent days. This line will determine what parts of the country see the arrival of springlike storms and what areas are still dealing with wintry impacts. The cold side of the storm track will continue to experience disruptive snow and ice through the weekend, creating widespread travel disruptions for the Upper Midwest and into the Northeast.

Heavy snow was the story on Wednesday for parts of the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest. Up to a foot of snow fell in the hardest-hit areas of North Dakota, Minnesota, and northern Michigan throughout the day Wednesday and into early Thursday. This system will begin to lose its punch as it moves into the Northeast, resulting in less snowfall for this corner of the country.
