Most beachgoers freeze when they spot a dorsal fin slicing through the waves. Ocean Ramsey does the opposite—she dives in.

A newly released Netflix documentary showcases Ramsey's unconventional life swimming freely with sharks, no cage, no protective gear, just her and some of the ocean's most powerful hunters. The film comes from James Reed, whose previous underwater documentary about befriending an octopus earned him an Academy Award.

Ramsey works with her partner Juan Oliphant, who films their underwater adventures. Together, they've built quite a following online—more than two million people track their shark encounters on Instagram. She insists her work comes from deep respect and understanding, not adrenaline-seeking.
