Bleaching of Coral Reefs - Sign of Irreversible Climate Change
The widespread death of the world's coral reefs is raising concern that it is becoming too hard to stop the impacts of global warming. A landmark study published recently demonstrates how the world is dealing with a "new reality" as it hits the first in a predicted series of devastating and possibly irreversible climate tipping points.
Scientists have been warning for years that the increased burning of fossil fuels is sending global temperatures incrementally higher. This warming of the planet is being blamed for the recent heat waves, more extreme flash flooding, amped up tropical weather events, droughts, and devastating wildfires. While these impacts are obvious, there are also more obscure effects that climate change is triggering. These include the accelerated melting of the polar ice sheets and the thinning of the Amazon rainforest.
