Your Hair Standing Up in a Storm Means You Could Be Moments Away From Death

If your hair starts standing up during a thunderstorm, get to safety immediately. That strange feeling means lightning is getting ready to strike where you stand.

There's a widely shared video that circulated online showing a group of friends in a parking lot when suddenly their hair goes wild. They're laughing about it, but they came within seconds of being struck by lightning. Pure luck — and an important warning that most people dismiss.

What's happening is static electricity building up right before lightning strikes. The storm clouds send down negative charges while positive charges jump up from the ground, including through people standing around in the open. According to NOAA, this phenomenon — called "ground charge" or electrical field buildup — is one of the clearest physical warnings that a strike is imminent.

Social Media Shows People Being Careless

Some girl named Ale Soto posted a TikTok last year showing her mom's hair sticking straight up at some tourist spot in Arizona. They're pointing at stuff and making crackling noises with the static, acting like they discovered something amazing. "We found a magnetic portal," she says. What they actually found was almost certain death.
