The devastation unleashed by the last deep freeze is coming into clearer focus. Late last month, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that at least 17 people in the metro area had died as a result of the latest surge of frigid temperatures. In addition to the hazards triggered by the relentless cold air, frozen ponds and lakes are also landmines during the depths of winter.

Officials in various places around the U.S. have reported that at least nine children died after falling through ice between late January and early February. The death toll does not include the dozens of other children and adults who were rescued after falling through the ice during this same time period.
