Cold and Icy Weather Pattern Continues to Grip Mid-Atlantic

A NOAA forecast map shows widespread snow, ice, and mixed precipitation pushing through the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachians, creating hazardous road conditions and a cold, stormy start to the weekend.

The end of the work week is bringing another round of wintry precipitation to the mid-Atlantic region. Colder temperatures overnight on Friday will create the risk of a freeze-up on the roads. Read on for what you need to know about the threat of dangerous road conditions.

Slippery Road Conditions Likely in the Mid-Atlantic Heading Into the Weekend

A fast-moving storm moving through the eastern U.S. is creating a messy end to the week for millions. This storm is already unleashing snow and ice through the central Appalachians and the mid-Atlantic. An abundance of cold air ahead of the storm will mean that most of the moisture will fall as either snow or ice. The northern flank of the system will see the highest chance of meaningful accumulation.

Dry air moving in over the central Appalachians and the upper edge of the mid-Atlantic and into southern New England will limit the wintry impacts. However, the areas that do see the flakes fly could be in store for a doozy of a winter weather event, particularly when compared to historical weather patterns this early in December.

As noted earlier in the week, the focal point of the accumulating snow will be across central portions of Virginia. Motorists in Virginia will want to be especially mindful of the deteriorating conditions into early Saturday. Communities such as Roanoke and Richmond have already seen 2 to 4 inches of snow.
