Gulf Coast and Southeast Brace for Surge of Tropical Moisture This Weekend
A long stretch of the interstates 10 and 20 corridors in the southern U.S. will be under the gun for heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout the weekend and into early next week. This is not shaping up to be the garden-variety summer rain event. Forecasters are warning that the moisture associated with this system will be plentiful enough to cause flooded roadways and wash out outdoor plans.
A large complex of thunderstorms is coming up from the Gulf and into southern Texas on Friday. While this zone of tropical moisture will not have enough time to evolve into a named feature, it will still pack quite a punch as it moves through South Texas into Saturday morning.
Localized flash flooding is possible in a zone from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, Texas. The threat will be the highest in low-lying areas. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible at times.
The line of rain showers and thunderstorms will expand as the weekend progresses. The Gulf Coast and the Southeast will be in the bullseye of the heaviest rain bands beginning late this weekend and persisting into the early part of next week. Repeated rounds of downpours and stormy conditions will be the story of the weekend for central and northeastern Texas and to the east into the Carolinas and northern Florida.
