Severe Storms Target the Plains and Southeast to Start the Week

Great Plains and Southeast Start Week on a Stormy Note

An active weather pattern will be the story for a large swath of the U.S. over the next few days. The stormy weather will come just days after portions of the eastern U.S. dodged a large complex of rare tornado-producing storms across parts of Delaware and Long Island. The primary impacts associated with this week's storms include heavy rain, hail, and damaging winds.

The Great Plains will be ground zero for Monday's action. Cities that should prepare for disruptive weather include Bismarck, North Dakota; Pierre, South Dakota; and North Platte, Nebraska. It could be a rough ride home from work and school on Monday evening in this region as downpours and high winds create travel disruptions.

A secondary pocket of severe weather is developing across some portions of the Southeast on Monday afternoon and into the evening hours. Flash flooding and wind gusts up to 80 mph will be the primary concerns as these storms rumble through the region. The elements associated with this line of storms will be capable of triggering flooded roadways and localized outages due to downed trees and power lines.

Communities that need to be prepared for thunderstorms to ignite later in the day Monday in the Southeast include Jackson, New Orleans, Mobile, and Panama City. The cluster of storms will also curve up the coast, impacting cities such as Charleston and Savannah.

The northern flank of the storms will creep as far as Wilmington, North Carolina. This coastal city is bracing for 1 to 2 inches of rain throughout the day.
