The interaction between a blast of Arctic air and a developing storm system will determine where snow develops in the eastern U.S. by the end of the week. This is what the forecast models are predicting fresh on the heels of the early-week winter event.

Early Details of Late-Week Winter Storm

It has already been a volatile stretch of winter weather for much of the central and eastern U.S. This pattern will persist in the days ahead as another wave of bitterly cold temperatures dives down from Canada, laying the groundwork for the potential of snow and ice in a zone from the Appalachians and up to New England

How the cold air and the energy from the storm merge will also determine where the snow/rain line will set up. Forecasters are already warning that this could turn into a major rain event in areas to the south.

The 72-hour precipitation outlook from Wednesday through Saturday shows the heaviest rainfall concentrated along the Gulf Coast, where 1–3 inches—and locally more—are expected as the developing winter storm taps deep Gulf moisture. (NOAA/WPC)
