Leaf peepers headed to Vermont may be disappointed this fall. An extreme drought is working to delay and mute the annual display of brilliant colors across the state. Here is a look at what is happening in this corner of the country as prime leaf-viewing season approaches.

Extreme Drought Impacting Vermont's Fall Foliage Season

Vermont is one of the most popular states in the U.S. to check out fall foliage. However, meteorologists are warning that this year's drought will impact the annual rite of passage, particularly for the iconic maple trees.

According to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, Vermont is under the designation of an extreme drought for the first time since this agency began monitoring these conditions in 2000. Vermont is not the only part of New England grappling with drought. Both Maine and New Hampshire are dealing with similar dryness.
