The collision of a mass of warm and humid air and a zone of cooler air will spur the development of several rounds of severe storms from Texas to the mid-Atlantic through the end of the work week. The severe weather will push from the Plains and into the mid-Atlantic and the Southeast as the week progresses. Learn what you need to know about the predicted timing of these storms here.

First Surge of Fall Storms Churning Across Eastern Half of U.S.

NOAA’s forecast map highlights widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain risks from Texas to the Northeast, marking the first major surge of fall storms. (NOAA/NWS)

The first chilly air mass of the fall season will clash with an area of moisture-rich and warm air in the eastern U.S. to lay the groundwork for gusty thunderstorms and heavy rain in the days ahead. This weather pattern is not unusual for times when the seasons begin to transition. A strengthening of the jet stream will pair with the normal flow of warm and humid air from the Gulf to raise the risk of severe weather.

Likely impacts of this weather maker include torrential rain, frequent lightning strikes, high winds, and hail. You also cannot rule out the chance of isolated tornadoes spinning up in the most powerful storm cells.
