Flash Flood Kills Young Girl as Major Storm System Moves South
Alexis Thornton
18 hours agoThe storm system that is currently unleashing heavy rain and snow in the higher terrains of the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday is forecast to crawl along to the east this week, bringing the moisture to the Gulf Coast next. Here is a look at this slow-moving weather maker and what to expect in the coming days.
Storm Blasts Colorado Front Range Before Heading to the South
The southern U.S. is next in line to see significant moisture as a major storm system ejects out of the Rockies and moves to the southeast. The system will bring a renewed threat of flooding to some while helping to alleviate growing drought conditions for others.
This storm system battered the Colorado Front Range on Tuesday, sending a deluge of rain over metro areas such as Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. The highest elevations of the region even saw some late-season snow out of the precipitation event.
The moisture machine will ease a bit on Wednesday across the Front Range, however, residents should expect lingering rain showers. For instance, Denver is forecast to see cloudy skies and periodic rain throughout the day before clearing skies take over during the evening hours. Temperatures will remain on the cool side in the Mile High City, topping out with a high of 56 degrees and lows that land at the 40-degree mark.
After picking up some snow on Tuesday, the mountain resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado, will see the mercury hit the mid 40s for a high on Wednesday. This will push any lingering snow showers over to rain. The moisture will have moved out by the time that the sun goes down and the temperatures tumble back into the mid 30s in this part of the Colorado High Country.
The rain will come to an end by Wednesday to the south in Albuquerque. New Mexico's largest city will wake up to cloudy skies early with sunshine expected in the afternoon. The sun will nudge the temperatures up into the mid 60s for a high before slipping into the upper 40s overnight.
As the storm system moves to the east, it will tap into the ample amounts of Gulf moisture to fuel its further growth. This will result in widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms that persist for days.
