The forecast models are starting to align, showing an increasing confidence that snow will impact portions of the southeastern U.S. before clipping the coastal Northeast through the weekend and into early next week. Here is a look at the latest snowfall predictions for the eastern U.S.

Snow on Deck for Some Parts of the Southeast

While the northern tier of the U.S. continues to see the impacts of three successive Alberta clipper storms, the Southeast is dealing with its own winter headaches. A storm is coming to life along an Arctic cold front heading into the weekend, threatening the unusual sight of snow for the Southeast. The fast-moving nature of this storm will limit the amount of snow that falls; however, accumulation will be significant enough to cause widespread disruptions.

Snow is expected to fall as far south as Alabama and into the Florida panhandle. While most communities in other parts of the U.S. would be able to handle this degree of snow, this region of the country is not accustomed to any type of wintry precipitation. As a result, the area is not equipped with the necessary plow trucks and salt treatments to effectively keep the roads clear when compared to the northern states.

The snow machine will fire up across the Gulf Coast late Saturday. Temperatures along the coast will remain warm enough to keep the snow from sticking to the roads. Other areas will see the temperatures drop just as the precipitation is moving out, sparing places such as the interior Gulf Coast from dicey road conditions.
