2 days agoThe skies turn dark. The wind picks up. The weather alert blares from your phone and weather radio. Severe weather can strike almost anywhere, often with little warning. Being ready ahead of time means you won't be scrambling when minutes count.
Ever wonder what weather experts keep in their own homes for emergencies? The answer might surprise you!
The Basics: What Every Kit Needs
A good weather emergency kit starts with the right container. Use something waterproof and easy to grab - like a large plastic bin with a lid or a sturdy backpack. Whatever you choose, make sure it's something your family can carry if you need to leave quickly.
The foundation of any kit is water. During disasters, tap water can become unsafe or stop flowing completely. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends a three day water supply for each person and pet in your home. That means one gallon per person per day - more in very hot climates or for people with special needs. Don't forget your furry family members need water too!
