How to Make the Most of Your Runs in Cold or Hot Weather

2 hours agoExperienced runners are well aware of how the weather can drastically impact any run. While some runners prefer the warmth of the summer months, other runners embrace this time of the year when cold and arid weather rules the landscape. Here is a look at how each type of weather pattern brings its own set of challenges, as well as some pro tips on how you can handle whatever Mother Nature throws at you when you toe the line.
Impacts of Cold Weather on Running
Running in cooler weather is naturally a treat after months of summer heat. Cold and dry weather makes running feel easier on the body. The dry and cool conditions inherently maximize sweat evaporation, lending an assist to the body as it works to maintain a steady core temperature.
Although the cooler temperatures feel great on the outside, some runners struggle with that familiar sting in the lungs and throat during these conditions. The natural dehydration of the bronchial lining when undergoing physical exertion is the root cause of this sting. The dry weather of winter also dehydrates the typically moist lining of the airways.
