As of midday Saturday, 6 inches of snow have already fallen across parts of the Plains as a far-reaching winter storm takes hold of the eastern two-thirds of the nation. Here is the latest on what is shaping up to be the most impactful winter weather event of the season.

Winter Storm Expanding Across Central and Eastern U.S.

The winter storm that forecasters have been warning about for days is here. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings across a wide swath of land from the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas through New England. States in the impact zone include Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Dozens of car crashes have already been reported in the southern U.S. as ice builds on the roadways. Meanwhile, those in the northern flank of the storm are dealing with heavy snow in places. Over 6 inches of snow has already been recorded in parts of Arkansas and Kansas.

For instance, Little Rock is coming in with 6 inches of snow by early Saturday afternoon. For context, the capital city of Arkansas typically records 5.1 inches of the white stuff over the entirety of the winter.
