You've probably heard the expression "In like a lion out like a lamb." The full version is "If March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb." This bit of weather folklore predicts late March weather based on how the weather appears early in the month.

But is there any truth to it? Weather folklore sayings are as colorful as our imagination. Some are based on careful observations and turn out accurate. Others are just rhymes or beliefs from people who came before us.

What People Used to Believe

Ancient peoples often believed bad spirits could affect the weather, so they were cautious about what they did or didn't do in certain situations.

Those beliefs often included ideas about balance in weather and life. If a month came in bad—roaring like a lion—it should go out good and calm. Docile, like a lamb.
