March to End on a Chilly Note for the Eastern U.S. Before Warmth Builds in April

2 hours agoTemperatures are forecast to soar across much of the eastern U.S. as April kicks off next week. However, the region will first need to push through another cooldown over the next few days. Read on for more information about this weather whiplash.
Next Week's Warmup Out East to be Precipitated by Cooler Temperatures
A building area of high pressure will send the mercury upwards by next week. But first, a large swath of the eastern U.S. will experience a sharp downturn in temperatures. The region will also be under the gun for an increased chance of stormy conditions coming along with the cold front to end the work week.
The long-range forecast signals that a surge of prolonged warmth will move over the southeastern corner of the country next week, ushering several consecutive days of temperatures in the 80s. The warmth will move in as the jet stream lifts to the north over the eastern U.S. just as a zone of high pressure comes to life off the southern Atlantic coast. This is a similar weather pattern that has been responsible for the record-breaking heat dome anchored over the western U.S. over the last week.
The jet stream position paired with the building high pressure will send temperatures well above the historical average for the beginning of April for several days in the Mississippi and Ohio valleys, the central Appalachians, and the Southeast. Some of this unseasonable warmth could also extend as far as the mid-Atlantic coast.
The zone of high pressure set up along the coastline of the Carolinas will also serve to push rain toward Florida. This will be a welcome change in the weather for the Sunshine State as the drought deepens across the peninsula. While it is not expected to be a widespread rain event, any bit of moisture will help to alleviate the growing drought conditions.
