A well-known great white shark named Breton is making headlines again after his satellite tracker recently pinged roughly 250 miles off the coast of northern Georgia. The massive male has been one of the most closely followed sharks in the Atlantic Ocean for the past several years, drawing the attention of researchers and ocean enthusiasts alike.

Breton was first tagged back in September 2020 off Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia, by the team at OCEARCH. At the time of his tagging, he measured an impressive 13 feet 3 inches in length and weighed 1,437 pounds. Since then, he has become one of the most recognized animals on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker platform.

About OCEARCH

An OCEARCH research vessel at sea, part of the nonprofit’s effort to tag and study sharks and other marine animals so scientists can better understand where they travel and how to protect them. (OCEARCH)

OCEARCH is a nonprofit organization with a global reach, focused on researching and protecting sharks, whales, sea turtles, and other marine animals. By attaching satellite tags to these creatures, the organization can track their migration routes, feeding habits, and behavioral patterns without disturbing them in their natural environment. The data collected helps scientists better understand how these animals move through the ocean and what they need to survive.
