One of the oldest and largest icebergs in the Antarctic is breaking apart and dying. Here is a look at what is happening to the iconic Antarctic Iceberg A-23A and why.

Last Days for Antarctic Iceberg A-23A

Antarctic Iceberg A-23A is on its last legs, serving as another reminder of the impacts of global warming. This legendary iceberg has been under the watchful eye of scientists for nearly four decades. The behemoth broke free from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica, sliding and drifting around this part of the world since that time. However, researchers are now warning that Iceberg A-23A is in its last days.

A-23A is distinguished as being one of the largest icebergs ever recorded. The giant slab of ice is currently drifting through the South Atlantic as bright blue meltwater pools around it. Oceanographers and climatologists are alarmed at the vividness of the blue water, saying that the sharp color is a sign that the iceberg is quickly losing its structural integrity. This sign could mean that A-23A has only a few days or weeks before it dissolves.
