Central Texas isn't getting a break from dangerous weather. Flash flooding remains a serious threat through midweek, even as rescue crews keep searching for people still missing from the deadly Independence Day floods.

More slow-moving storms are expected to hit parts of central Texas through Wednesday before things finally calm down. But even without more thunderstorms, brutal Texas summer heat is making search and recovery operations extremely tough for crews working nonstop.

Why This Area Floods So Bad

The region's dry soil and rocky terrain create perfect conditions for flash flooding when thunderstorms hit and don't move. The soil here doesn't soak up water like other parts of the country, so rain just runs off instead of getting absorbed.

What made the Independence Day flooding so deadly was a nightmare combination. Extremely humid air from the Gulf of Mexico had been sitting around for days, triggering random but heavy thunderstorms across the area.
