The bad news is that the Northeast will continue to be under the threat of rain showers and scattered thunderstorms for the next few days. The good news is that clear conditions are expected by Mother's Day for this corner of the country. Here is a look at the Mother's Day forecast for the Northeast.

Rain to Persist Through End of Work Week for the Northeast

A persistent storm system has created a week of unsettled weather for the Northeast and beyond. Several rounds of rain have fallen across the region over the last few days with more on the way to close out the week.

For instance, Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, has recorded nearly 3 inches of rain in the period between Monday morning and Wednesday morning. It was even wetter in Oxford, Connecticut. This community has seen 3.24 inches over the same 48-hour period. Severe weather has also roamed the region. A funnel cloud was spotted across eastern Pennsylvania on Tuesday afternoon.

This storm began to move out of the Northeast and into southeastern Canada on Wednesday. This movement put New England in the crosshairs for sporadic rain showers and thunderstorms through the end of the day.

The water-logged region will see just a brief break from the moisture machine. Another storm is forecast to come together on Thursday over the Ohio Valley and the eastern Great Lakes. The result will be more widespread precipitation that creeps into the central Appalachians and the mid-Atlantic.

The greatest chance of locally severe thundestorms will be in the zone south of the primary storm track. This will include a large swath of land from Mississippi and up into parts of Virginia and West Virginia throughout the day on Thursday.

Widespread rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 0.75 of an inch are in the forecast for the Northeast on Thursday and Friday. Higher amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the zone from eastern Pennsylvania and over into central New England. This fresh wave of moisture is in addition to the rain that has fallen this week. The continual surge of rain will create the risk of water spilling out of the banks of some of the region's smaller waterways.

The highest odds of rain for the Northeast will hit again later in the day and night on Thursday. For example, Philadelphia is forecast to pick up a quarter of an inch of rain overnight Thursday. Moving to the south along Interstate 95, Washington, D.C. will also see the return of rain and the threat of a stray thunderstorm after the sun goes down.
