It will certainly feel like spring across the Plains and the Ohio Valley this week. Several rounds of severe storms will kick off the season, presenting a number of potential hazards. Here is what you need to know about the upcoming volatile weather pattern.

March Kicking Off with a Bang with Widespread Thunderstorms in the Central U.S.

A pronounced dip in the jet stream over the West collides with warm, moisture-rich Gulf air surging north, creating the perfect setup for multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms from Texas to the Ohio Valley. NOAA

The clash of cold air from the north and warmer temperatures and moisture coming up from the Gulf will lay the groundwork for severe storms to fire up through the first week of March and beyond. The multi-day threat of severe weather will raise the chance of flooding in the zone from Texas to Ohio this week.

The storms will come together due to a variety of factors. A pronounced southward dip in the jet stream will set up over western portions of the U.S. later in the week, allowing cold air to creep down from Canada. Meanwhile, a northward bulge in the jet stream over the East will bring up warmer air to this half of the country. The swath of land caught in the middle of these two competing air masses will be ground zero for the development of thunderstorms and their associated impacts.
