Evacuation Warnings Issued in Los Angeles
Evacuation warnings are now in effect for parts of Los Angeles that have been at a high risk of mudslides. The evacuation zone includes the Pacific Palisades community, a region that was devastated by the January wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
An expansive zone of low pressure is responsible for the heavy rain and thunderstorms across California. The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning that mudslides, debris flows, and flash flooding will continue to be a threat in recent burn scar areas. Burn scars are vulnerable to flooding as the leftover ash from wildfires forms a water-repellent covering that inhibits the natural absorption of water by the ground.
Mandatory evacuations were ordered for 114 homes late Monday night. Law enforcement officials went door to door to warn residents that evacuation was necessary. The evacuation warning remains in effect through at least 6 am on Wednesday for the zones previously impacted by the Hurst, Palisades, and Sunset fires.
