The possibility of a bomb cyclone is in the cards for a long stretch of the East Coast this weekend, ushering in the threat of heavy snow from the Carolinas and up the coastline into New England. Here is what the latest forecast models are telling us about this increasing risk.

Major Winter Storm Taking Aim at East Coast

Forecasters are warning that coastal flooding and blizzard conditions are both in the picture in the days ahead as a storm comes to life along the Atlantic coastline. The potent weather maker will churn up the seas, causing significant coastal flooding and beach erosion. Meanwhile, the northern flank of the system could see blizzard conditions.

It will be another weekend of widespread travel disruptions for the eastern half of the nation. The heavy snow is expected to affect operations at a number of the busiest airport hubs in the region, stretching from Charlotte to the north into Boston. In addition to the mounting flight cancellations and delays, motorists will also likely face numerous delays up and down the populated Interstate 95 corridor.

The latest forecast predicts the storm will begin to take shape on Friday in the southern U.S. The first impacts of this system will come in the form of rain showers along the Gulf Coast and into Florida and the southern Atlantic coastline. A mix of rain and snow will be the story moving to the north into Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
