It could be a scary day of weather for residents living on the eastern shore of Lake Erie. A rare "seiche" is triggering a storm surge that is best compared to a hurricane across the lake. Here is a closer look at this unusual weather phenomenon.

Forecasters Predict a Rare Seiche Along Lake Erie

A seiche is a weather event that most people never get a chance to witness. Looking at a seiche is akin to staring down the storm surge and waves generated by a hurricane. However, a seiche can ignite during the winter months, sending snow and lake ice into the surge.

Those living on the east shore of Lake Erie could witness a seiche late Wednesday. The water levels of the massive lake could rise up so high that it overflows onto roadways, creating travel concerns. Residents with lakeshore houses may also see the water infiltrate their yards during the peak of the activity. Conversely, residents on the west shore of the lake will see the waters recede away from them.
